Start Here: Our Core Indian Destination Wedding Planning Guides

Three guides form the foundation of everything else on this page. Each one answers a big question couples face early, and each points you to more detailed resources as you go.
The Complete Guide to Planning a South Asian Destination Wedding
Our complete guide to planning a South Asian destination wedding in Mexico and the Caribbean walks you through the whole process in order: choosing a destination, selecting a resort, understanding who does what on your planning team, coordinating guest travel, managing your room block and building your wedding-week schedule. If you’re new to destination weddings, read this one first.
How to Evaluate Indian Destination Wedding Resorts
Beautiful photos and glowing reviews won’t tell you whether a resort can host a 250-guest sangeet or cook dal the way your family expects. Our guide to evaluating Indian destination wedding resorts shows you what to look at instead: venue capacity and variety, Indian food execution, baraat routes, outside-vendor policies, room inventory and rain plans.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Indian Destination Wedding Budget
The lowest room rate rarely leads to the lowest total cost. Our Indian destination wedding budget guide breaks down where couples typically spend, where smart decisions stretch every dollar and how one choice ripples into the next. For more context on the numbers, see our breakdown of the average cost of an Indian destination wedding and our guide to all-inclusive Indian wedding packages in Mexico.
Resort Guides

Plenty of resorts host weddings. Far fewer can handle a multi-day South Asian celebration with hundreds of guests, several venue changes and a kitchen that cooks authentic Indian food at scale. Our resort guides look at individual properties through exactly that lens.
Each guide covers the details a hotel website leaves out: which venues suit which events, where the baraat can travel, how the kitchen handles Indian menus and dietary needs, how guests get around the property and what trade-offs you should weigh before you sign. Our team adds new guides as we tour and work with resorts across Mexico and the Caribbean.
Featured resort guide: Moon Palace The Grand Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Moon Palace The Grand Punta Cana is one of the newest all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic, and our team had exclusive first access to it before anyone else during construction. And once construction finished, the resort invited us back again to tour it in person. This guide covers the venues, restaurants, guest rooms and how the property works from the perspective of a South Asian wedding week. View the Moon Palace The Grand Punta Cana guide

Destination Guides

Before you choose a resort, you choose a place. Cancun, Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, Punta Cana, Jamaica and other destinations differ in flight access, weather, resort style, beaches and overall value, and those differences shape your guests’ experience as much as any venue does.
Our destination guides help you weigh those trade-offs before you start comparing properties. Each guide connects to the resort guides and planning resources for that area, so you can move straight from “where should we get married?” to “which resort is right for us?”
If Mexico is on your list, start with our guide to Indian destination weddings in Mexico, which explains how Mexico works for South Asian celebrations. You can also explore our destination overviews for Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Costa Rica, or browse all destinations.
What to Confirm Before You Book a Resort for Your Indian Destination Wedding

Once you have a shortlist, five considerations separate the resorts that look right from the resorts that work. Get clear answers on each one before you sign a contract.
Your guest count shapes every decision
A resort that works beautifully for 100 guests may struggle with 300. Guest count affects room inventory, restaurant capacity, transportation, event flow and how much of the property your group effectively takes over. Look for comfortable capacity rather than the maximum number on a venue chart. Our roundup of the best resorts for Indian weddings in Cancun compares properties with group size in mind, and our full resort directory covers Mexico and the Caribbean.
Your room block carries real financial weight
Your room block affects your rates, concessions, complimentary rooms and event benefits, and it can create financial commitments with the resort. Before you sign, understand attrition, payment milestones and giveback dates, and size the block to your realistic guest list rather than your invitation list. Our complete planning guide explains how room blocks fit into the bigger picture.
Indian food needs a proven kitchen
A resort that says it can do Indian food and a resort that serves a great Indian menu to 250 guests across four days are two very different things. When we evaluate resorts, we look beyond the sample menu. We consider the culinary team’s Indian wedding experience, the quality and authenticity of the food, menu flexibility and the resort’s ability to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, Jain and other dietary requirements.
Food should be part of the resort-selection conversation from the beginning—not something you discover after the contract is signed. Our resort evaluation guide explains the questions couples should ask about Indian cuisine and dietary requirements before booking.
Every event deserves its own setting
Your welcome party, mehndi, haldi, sangeet, ceremony and reception should each feel like its own experience. The strongest resorts offer real variety in beachfront lawns, gardens, terraces, rooftops and ballrooms, and they make it easy for hundreds of guests to move between them. Our resort evaluation guide shows you how to judge each space.
Your traditions lead, and the resort follows
A destination wedding does not mean compromising the traditions that matter to your family. Experienced South Asian wedding resorts can accommodate all South Asian traditions. That means a resort with experience in South Asian weddings can easily execute traditional Hindu weddings that may include events such as the mehndi, haldi, sangeet, baraat, Hindu ceremony with a havan and reception. They should just as easily be able to do a Sikh Anand Karaj or elements of each couple’s traditions in an interfaith celebration. Just as importantly, the right resort understands the logistics behind it: mandap placement, fire and sound policies, baraat routes, ceremony timing and weather backups.

Frequently Asked Questions About Planning an Indian Destination Wedding

Where should we start when planning an Indian destination wedding?
Start with four things: your approximate guest count, your budget, your preferred dates and the experience you want for your guests. Those answers narrow your destination, and your destination narrows your resort list. Our complete planning guide walks through each step in order.
What are the best destinations for an Indian destination wedding?
Mexico and the Caribbean offer the strongest mix of resort options, flight access and Indian wedding experience. Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa Mujeres, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Cana and Jamaica each bring different advantages. The right fit depends on your guest count, budget, travel needs and vision for the week.
How do we choose the right resort for a South Asian destination wedding?
Judge a resort by how it handles South Asian weddings, not by its photos. Compare Indian food execution, venue variety, room inventory, room-block terms, baraat logistics, vendor policies, weather backups and guest experience. Our resort evaluation guide and resort guides cover each of these in detail.
Can resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean serve authentic Indian food?
Yes, many can, but quality varies widely. Some resorts have experienced Indian chefs and established wedding menus, while others offer limited options. Confirm vegetarian, vegan and Jain accommodations before you choose a resort.
How many guests can an Indian destination wedding include?
Indian destination weddings range from intimate gatherings to 300 guests or more. The real question is whether a resort can comfortably host your group across guest rooms, restaurants, transportation and every event, not whether one ballroom technically fits everyone.
Can we have a traditional ceremony at an all-inclusive resort?
Yes. Resorts experienced with South Asian weddings regularly host traditional ceremonies along with mehndi, haldi, sangeet and baraat events. Confirm fire policies, mandap placement, baraat routes and sound restrictions while you’re still choosing a resort.
How far in advance should we start planning?
For most larger Indian destination weddings, start 12 to 18 months ahead. That window gives you better access to preferred resorts, dates, venues and room inventory. Very large groups and peak-season dates benefit from starting even earlier.
Do we need a destination wedding agency if the resort has a wedding coordinator?
The two play different roles. The resort coordinator manages the services the resort provides. A destination wedding agency like IDW compares resorts for you, negotiates and manages your room block, coordinates guest travel and connects every piece of the wedding before and throughout your wedding week.
